Coffee, Cupcakes and Conversation on March 16
All current parents are invited to join President Rosann Whiting and Principal Michelle Smith along with Shannon Parker, Dean of Academics, and Mary-Kate Tracy-Robidoux, Director of Mission Effectiveness, for reflections on the current year, school updates and conversation. Thursday, March 16, 7 p.m. in the Tea Room. RSVP if you are able to attend.

Mission Day this Thursday March 9
All students are reminded that this Thursday, March 9, is Mission Day. Please remember to bring in your raffle basket donation to your homeroom teacher.  All students should know what their assigned item is.  Also, please note that Mission Day is a "dress down" day, and guidelines in the handbook should be followed. Mission Day will support Ursuline missions around the world and the 7th Grade KIVA project. Please check with Campus Ministry if you have any questions about the event.

 

Winter Play "Story Emporium" This Weekend
The Ursuline Community is encouraged to attend this weekend's winter play "Story Emporium." The play was written and directed by Ursuline's own drama director Dean Calusdian. Performances are at 7 p,m.on both Friday March 10 and Saturday March 11. Please come out and support our theater arts students!

 

National Latin Exam
The National Latin Exam is Tuesday, March 14. All Latin students will take the exam during first period (B block). Please bring a number 2 pencil!

 

RAD Course Offered March 13-15
Members of the Boston Police Department will offer a RAD course at UA on March, 13, 14, and 15 from 3-5:30 pm. The Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) System is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques. It is a comprehensive course for women that begins with practices that teach awareness and avoidance, and progresses to the basics of hands-on defense training. All students are welcome to participate. However, parents should be aware that the program is physically demanding and that simulated attacks can be frightening. The cost of the course is $50 (assistance is available). Spaces are limited. To enroll, please turn the attached permission slip in to Dr. Muldoon by March 12.

Women in Leadership
On Friday, students in grades 9-12 heard from three Ursuline alumnae in a variety of fields at our annual Women in Leadership Symposium. The panelists shared their reflections on their paths from Ursuline to where they are now, blending career and life advice with some of their favorite memories from their Ursuline days. A great big thank you goes out to Carolyn Thorne '90 P'22 (veterinarian), Nancy Sinclair '86 (data designer), and Mary Kate Harrington '10 (nurse). Ursuline hearts unite!

UA Speech Team Competes at Tufts University Invitational
This past Saturday, February 25, the Speech Team competed at the Tufts University Invitational. Performing in rounds across the university's campus, Ursuline achieved record-breaking results, with the following girls advancing and placing in finals across six different categories: Sophia Maher '20, Bridget Dwyer '19, Jamie Folwell '19, Marie Kimball '19, Maddie Mullen '19, Hannah Woodworth '19, Maggie Chipman '17, Folwell & Folwell. Special congratulations to Maggie Folwell '20, tournament champion in Novice Reading!

Ursuline Seniors Visit DC for Close Up Program
Seniors Bridget Cahill, Anna Fantozzi, Julia Mullert, and Olivia Saraf participated in the Close Up program over February vacation. Their experiences included participating in a Mock Congress, meeting with staffers for the Massachusetts U.S. Senators, exploring the National Museum of African American History & Culture, and making friends with students from 16 states and countries. Ashley Thomas '18 Sets UA Record
Junior Ashley Thomas headed to the All State Track Meet on Sunday, February 26, and brought home a medal for her eighth place finish in the 55 meter sprint, as well as a new school record for the event. At the All State meet, athletes compete across divisions in their respective events. Congratulations, Ashley!

Nicola Carmone '21 to Compete in State Ski Championships
Nicola Carmone '21 will be competing Tuesday, March 7 at the MIAA State Championships at Wachusett Mountain. Nicola finished 6th overall in the Alpha Division of the Mass Bay Ski League. She scored 215 of Ursuline's 224 total team points this season and had three top 10 finishes in a league with over 100 racers. Nicola is the first Bear to compete at the State Champs in 4 years. She was coached by alumna Stephanie Klaubert '12.

Tryouts for all spring sports begin on Monday, March 20.  Please note that all athletic paperwork for spring sports is due on Friday, March 10. Please see the Tryout page on the web site for details.

UA Students Spend Winter Break at Romero Center
During February break, several students from Ursuline teamed up with Xaverian and St. John's Shrewsbury for a service immersion program at the Romero Center in Camden, NJ. Each day they learned about the challenges of living in poverty and volunteered at nursing homes, adult disability centers, schools, soup kitchens and homeless shelters. Thank you to faculty members Katie McNally, Erin Cummins and Emily Linthicum for accompanying the students on the trip.

 

Norfolk Clean & Green Campaign

Students who live in the Norfolk area are invited to the 8th Annual Norfolk Clean & Green Campaign on Saturday, April 8th between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Volunteers of all ages will be cleaning up litter from Norfolk roadsides and public places and dropping it off at the Norfolk Grange Hall. The Norfolk Grange will provide recognition certificates to participants and the project qualifies for Ursuline service hours. All participants will celebrate the collection with light refreshments, giveaways, and lots of Earth Day information at the Grange Hall. Wanted: Drawstring Bags!
Seventh grader Olivia Tuffy is collecting gently used or new drawstring bags to donate to a primary school in Tanzania where she has spent time. Donations can be brought to the campus ministry office over the next two weeks. Thanks for your support!

Mission Day Clothing Collection 

Got Jeans? Got Sweatshirts? On Mission Day, bring in your freshly laundered jeans and sweatshirts that no longer fit, look good on you, or that you simply don't want any more! We will gather them up and donate them to a charity or home for women and children. We will be collecting the jeans and sweatshirts in the "Wee Care Bear Room" on Mission Day! Thank you for your support!

Screenagers Film Program for Parents at XBHS 

Ursuline and Xaverian Brothers are co-sponsoring a presentation of the documentary Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age, on Tuesday, March 14, at 6:30 p.m. The film highlights how many modern families struggle to balance social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through insights from authors and brain scientists, solutions emerge on how to empower kids to best navigate the digital world. The program will be held at Xaverian Brothers High School, 800 Clapboardtree Street, in Westwood. Please RSVP to Joanne Fay at Xaverian if you plan on attending.
