Honor Societies, Clubs & Activities



Ursuline Academy believes that extracurricular activities should offer opportunities for personal growth. The school sponsors many clubs, activities and athletic programs designed to develop talents and abilities while fostering self-esteem, discipline and a spirit of cooperation. These activities give the student the occasion to develop special talents, provide wholesome leisure time activity, and call for exercise of qualities of leadership and mutual cooperation.

Art Club - This enrichment activity engages students in a relaxed open art studio atmosphere. Members are able to focus, explore new art media, increase confidence, and improve their skills while they fulfill a desire to make art.    

Big Sisters - Each seventh grade student is paired with a "Big Sister." This older student will offer guidance and friendship to make the transition to Ursuline Academy a smooth one!

Book Club - Meets periodically in the Library to discuss/discover various books and works of literature.

Choral Group - This invitational group is a very important part of the monthly religious services at the School. They gather to practice at various times throughout the school day, and perform at numerous events throughout the year.

Current Events Club - This club discusses and debates world events.  Members subscribe to the NY Times and prepare presentations on world issues, as well as view and discuss films of significance, such as, "An Inconvenient Truth".

Dance Club - This club provides the participants with the opportunity to develop, self- confidence, so when they are at a formal, they are not intimidated and feel confident stepping forward on the dance floor;  to learn the fundamentals of ballroom dancing;  to develop poise, grace and respect of others, through the international language of ballroom dancing.

Drama Club - A group of very talented young ladies who love to sing, dance, create and have fun. They present two performances a year (Early Winter and Spring.)

Foreign Language Club - 
is open to all students who are taking Spanish, French or Latin who are interested in exploring foreign language and culture. 

Glee Club - The Glee Club practices throughout the year for two performances; the Christmas Gathering and the Spring Showcase. Students who enjoy singing are encouraged to join.

Humanities Club - This club provides the girls the opportunity to be in touch with the Arts in all its forms. Monthly meetings consist of lectures by speakers who have achieved expertise in a variety of art forms--dance, music, and painting, among others.  One activity that has become a tradition is a Mother-Daughter evening. A dinner out is followed by attendance at a performance of the Boston Pops.  All events are open to the entire Ursuline community 

 Instrumental Music - The Ursuline Chamber Ensemble is made up of intermediate and advanced musicians in Grades 8-12.  It is a newly formed group under the direction of Mrs. Christine Nicholas who is also on the faculty of Dedham Country Day School,and gives private violin lessons. Our 11 musicians share their skills on Strings (Violin, Viola,Cello), Flute, Piano, Irish Accordian and Clarinet. In this first year, the Ensemble will perform at the Christmas Gathering and later, in the Spring Concert performed for the Student Body.

Library Council - Students in the Library Council provide assistance in the Library. They check materials out, re-shelve books, and assist students with information needs and the copier. Each year special projects are undertaken.

Math League - Students in Algebra I up to A.P. Calculus compete in six contests over the academic year. The questions are presented in a non-traditional way based on the math curriculum.    

National Honor Society - The National Honor Society recognizes the ideals of scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Students must achieve a high scholastic standing in order to be considered for membership. A special induction service is held each year to honor those who are invited to join.

Newspaper, The Blazer - The school newspaper is published four times per year.  Girls in grade 9 - 12 may join the staff as a formal activity, but every grade level is encouraged to contribute articles, poems, photos, and ideas.

Social Justice in Film - This group meets each week to watch and discuss classic films. The group decides which films to view. Field trips to a local theater are occasional.

Speech Team practices throughout the year and competes in many regional competitions. Experienced students on the team act as coaches for the newer students.
 
Student Ambassadors - The purpose of the Student Ambassadors Club is to serve Ursuline Academy by promoting the school to interested young ladies and their parents. Ambassadors assist with various aspects of the recruiting process such as addressing invitations, giving tours during Open House, representing the school at high school fairs, helping out at receptions for accepted students, and welcoming new students to the Academy.

Student Council - This group is comprised of fourteen students:  two elected representatives from each grade, a president and vice president of the student body, elected school-wide.  Weekly meetings are held and are open to the entire school community, during which students discuss issues and concerns with regard to student life.  In addition, Student Council sponsors such activities as the Winter Dance, Spirit Week, Inner Beauty Day, and the Christmas Assembly.

Students Offer Service - promotes the school's motto "SERVIAM: I will serve". Students promote and assist in school-wide projects such as Mission Day, Thanksgiving Food Drive for Emmanuel House, Christmas clothe-a-child for Emmanuel House, and the Cinderella Project.

Yearbook - Members of this group assist in the design, content, and layout of the yearbook, which is published at the end of the year.
