9th Annual Women in Leadership Symposium
On Friday, March 24 the 9th Annual Women in Leadership Symposium was held
in the auditorium of Ursuline Academy. Alumnae from a wide variety of
professions returned to speak about their work and life experiences
with the junior and senior classes. Alumnae who spoke were: Mary Beth
Murphy Roche '81, Susan Looney '83, Sandra Frezza '81, Michaela McMahon
Popeo '89, Lisa Sabino Piccolo '81, Lynn-Marie Reveliotis '86, Kerry
Gilligan Nero '88, Mary Nealon Lusardi '81, Bridget Walsh Graham '91, Ann
Mahoney Fisher '81, and Joan Ryan Parker '71. The symposium was emceed and
coordinated by Maureen Sullivan Huddleston '81, Alumnae Director,
and the staff of the Advancement Office.
The experiences of the alumnae were varied, but common themes this year
were an encouragement for the current students to cherish and rely on the
friendships they have formed with each other, to network with one another
and with other women, and to study and take classes in areas they enjoy
and for which they have a passion. Mary Beth Murphy Roche said, "women in
particular feel an obligation to reach back and help the next group of
women to come on board," and also urged the students to get "outside of
their comfort zone. That's what makes it dynamic. That's what makes it
interesting. Don't always stay safe." Mary Nealon Lusardi encouraged the
students to look within themselves and to "show up." "If you don't show up
and try," she said, "you have no way of succeeding at anything."
