The class of 2018 celebrated making their final decisions on which college to attend by donning their sweatshirts for a group photo. Seniors finished their classes last week, take AP exams next week, and then head off to their service sites before returning in early June for graduation-related activities.

Community Reception for President Rosann Whiting

Parents are invited to join with the Ursuline community for a reception honoring President Rosann Whiting this Wednesday, May 9, from 5:30 - 8 p.m. at the Ursuline Convent. Sophomore Parent Meeting

The Guidance Department will be holding a workshop for current grade 10 parents ("rising juniors") on Wednesday, May 30 at 6:30 p.m. Parents are asked to RSVP to Mary Ferrucci at mferrucci@ursulineacademy.net.


Faculty and Staff Appreciation
Ursuline faculty and staff will be feted with two parent-led events in May - a continental breakfast on Friday, May 11th and an after-school dessert reception on Friday, May 18th. Parents should have received an email this past week with details on how to sign up to donate items or help staff the events. For info, email specialevents@ursulineacademy.net.

Ursuline Trip to Ireland - April 2019
An informational meeting for parents & prospective tourists will be held this Thursday, May 10 at 6:30 p.m. This tour is now open to current freshman, sophomores, and juniors.

The tour company is offering a limited-time discount that will apply to all who enroll. The tour includes travel from Dublin around the western and southern coast to Kilkenny, Killarney, Dingle, and Galway and will visit most of the major historical, cultural and scenic sites. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Petti.

Ursuline Study Abroad Trip to Rome - June 2019
An informational meeting for parents & prospective scholars will be held on Thursday, May 17 at 6:30 p.m. This study experience is open to current freshman, sophomores, and juniors.

This two-week long study abroad trip is sponsored by Latin and Theology and will take place June 12-27, 2019.  Learning will take place on site as students go on excursions to various sites throughout Rome, Florence, Assisi and more. They will see world famous historical sites and art, dine on Italian food and gelato, and experience living in the Eternal City! It's finally looking like Spring and we are teeing up for our 26th annual golf tournament at the Blue Hill Country Club in Canton on Tuesday, May 29. Not a golfer? Join your golfing spouse or plan a fun night out with your friends for cocktails, dinner, and our silent auction. Over 70% of our students participate in at least one sport at Ursuline and this is all FORE the girls! Registration for golf and dinner closes Thursday, May 17th so sign up now!

National Honor Society Inducts Thirty-three

On Thursday, May 3 we welcomed 33 members of the Class of 2019 into the Angeline Chapter of the National Honor Society.  NHS serves to honor high school students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Read more.

Athletic Highlights
Ursuline Track and Field had a big week, finishing 7th out of 44 competing teams at the Division 4 State Relays last Saturday, April 28. The shot put team of Mackenzie Enos, Siobhan O'Sullivan, and Caroline Afonso finished second in their event with a school record 98' 2". Our distance medley team of Mary Schiavo, Kaleigh Wyers, Maddi Sanders and Lauren Grela also finished second in their event with a stellar time of 13.25.31, and the 4 x 100 team of Jackie Hayes, Olivia Manning, Kelly Cheevers and Ashley Thomas finished 4th. On Wednesday, the team headed to NDA, where Jackie Hayes qualified for divisional competition on the 100 dash, and Ashley Thomas qualified in the long jump. Softball continued its winning ways with a 14-2 win over NDA and a 7-2 win over Norfolk Aggie. They now are only two games away from qualifying for the state tournament.

Boston Crime Lab Visits UA
Deb and Kevin Kosiorek of the Boston Police Crime lab spoke to Ms. Stokes' psychology classes on Monday, April 30, about their work on the 2009 Craigslist killer case. Deb is a latent prints specialist who regularly guest lectures in educational forums and instructs Boston Police Detectives in the theory and practice of latent print recovery and analysis, and Kevin is a criminalist. Students learned about investigative techniques, fingerprint technology, and had a chance to take their own fingerprints

Still need service hours? Get in the sun & in the dirt and join us for service on a farm! The Food Project Farm donates their produce to food banks, providing fresh vegetables to families and individuals in need. Transportation is provided. Please sign up outside of the Campus Ministry Office.

 

Green Club Participates in Charles River Watershed Cleanup

Students from Ursuline Academy's Green Club, along with Mrs. Graham, their faculty advisor, collected eleven large bags of litter on and around the grounds of the Greenlodge School in Dedham last Saturday. The girls were participating as part of the Charles River Watershed Association's annual Earth Day cleanup. Greenlodge School is located in the Charles River watershed, so any trash at that site ultimately ends up in the river.

Ursuline Student Artists Shine
Kaleigh Wyers '19 was recently notified that she has been accepted into Art All State! Art All State consists of a two day and one night workshop at UMass Dartmouth in June. Students work in small groups with working artists to create installation art. There is an exhibit and artists' reception at the end of the weekend. Congratulations are due to Kaleigh for her hard work. Each high school in the state is allowed to nominate 2 students for this honor, who then submit artwork, teacher recommendations and participate in an interview before being accepted. In other fine arts news, Sawyer Strouth '20 received an Honorable Mention in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for her painting called On the Surface. Sawyer and Marlaine Hanna '20  also had work chosen for a juried exhibition of high school artwork called "NEXT UP!" put on by the Page Waterman Gallery in Wellesley. Model UN Wins Awards at Sandwich High Conference
On Saturday, April 28th, 11 members of Ursuline's Model UN team atte
nded the Sandwich High School Model UN conference, including Kiara Cronin '18, Brooke DeLucia '20, Aine Doyle '20, Rosie Gellene '19, Samantha Lord '18, Amelia Marcheski '20, Cate McCluskey '20, Kendra Miller '20, Hamsa Shanmugam '20, Rose Stefanidakis '20, and Anna Vernacchio '20. The team did a great job representing their assigned positions, and displayed excellent diplomacy and compromising skills. The following awards were won by Ursuline girls:

  • Honorable mention, resolution writing in DNC, Rosie Gellene
  • Honorable mention, oratory in RNC, Kendra Miller
  • Best Delegate in US Senate, Hamsa Shanmugam
  • Honorable mention, resolution writing in 2008 mortgage crisis, Rose Stefanidakis
  • Honorable mention, oratory in Detroit Race Riots, Cate McCluskey
  • Honorable mention, oratory in Senior Committee, Samantha Lord

Swim Across America Relay Challenge
Congratulations to the Ursuline Swim & Dive Team, which swam in the Swim Across America Team Relay Challenge on Sunday, April 29, and raised $10,237 for cancer research! The Bears also out-raised the CM Knights, so the Knights had to take a picture wearing Ursuline swim caps.

Nearly 20 Ursuline students volunteered at the 35th annual James Joyce Ramble and corresponding fun run for kids, The North Star Ramble, on Sunday, April 29 at the Endicott Estate in Dedham. The Ramble's volunteer coordinator sent a note of appreciation after the race, complimenting our students on their service.
