Bears in Action Thinking Turtles Over the past few months, the "Thinking Turtles" (an offshoot of the Science Club), led by Chloe Byrne '19 and Christina Crognale '19, has researched various ecological and environmental issues and the related effects on wildlife, human health, and the planet as a whole. Christina and Chloe held a two-day plant sale recently at the Dedham Library, where flowers and herbs in biodegradable pots were sold, and visitors could learn more about the issues displayed in the flyers. Nearly $100 was raised for the Mass Audubon Society. Christina plans to host other community events to raise more money for the cause, and most importantly, awareness and a desire to help the planet. If you are interested in joining the team in other projects and events in the future, email Christina at crognale.christina@gmail.com. Summer Opportunity for Student Science Research Program at BC Mrs. Mathew's AP Chem and AP Bio classes were joined by Boston College Prof. Jeffrey A. Byers last week for a presentation and experiment on the Paper to Plastics program at BC, a summer program uniting chemistry and biology to engage young women and underrepresented minorities in scientific research. During the eight-week program, high school students meet once a week and are exposed to a real research environment. Additionally, the high school students work closely with BC undergraduates, who will guide them through the technical aspects of the research and serve as role models to encourage careers in science and technology. Students interested in learning more or applying to the program should contact Professor Byers (jeffrey.byers@bc.edu) or Professor Weerapana eranthie.weerapana@bc.edu).
