It has been a remarkable spring athletic season for Ursuline Academy, with the tennis and golf teams both winning the South Sectional Championship in their division. Tennis went 9 and 5 on the season and proceeded to the tournament, where they defeated Sacred Heart-Kingston in the first round. On June 12, the team upset Bishop Stang to win a bid to sectionals, where they defeated Cohasset by a score of 4-1. Members of the team include Mimi Dailey, Alessia Cahoon, and Mimi O'Connell at singles, and Julia Steponaitis, Eleanor O'Connell, Bella Lambros, Samantha Cahoon, Samantha Barry and Katie Nelson at doubles.
UA golf also had a great run, posting a regular season record of 13-4-1. They walked away with the team trophy at the North/Central/West Sectional Championship on June 11. Heddia Djusberg (86), Alyssa Patterson (92), Emma King (105), MacKenzie Moore (107), Emily Lewis and Rose Stefanidakis all contributed to the effort. (See Boston Herald article here.) They competed in the State Tournament on June 13.
The lacrosse team made it further in the state tournament than ever before in school history, winning two rounds over Archbishop Williams (see related article) and third-seeded Falmouth Academy before falling to Cohasset. The softball team finished the regular season with a record of 12-6, making it to the second round of the tournament. Track & field sent 17 athletes and all three relay teams to the divisional competition, and posted a meet record of 2-1.
Perhaps best of all, Ursuline athletes remain gracious in times of victory and defeat. Both the tennis and lacrosse teams have received the MIAA sportsmanship award, a team designation that recognizes a spirit of sportsmanship that goes beyond what is expected. It is highly unusual for two teams from one school to receive the sportsmanship commendation in a single season, a testament to the character of Ursuline athletes and coaches. Congratulations to all the athletes and coaches for their dedication throughout the season!
