On March 7, Ursuline Academy ignited Women’s History Month with its powerful Women in Leadership Program. This transformative gathering brought together 16 accomplished alumnae from diverse fields—engineering, finance, healthcare, and consulting, among others—who shared their journeys and inspired students from grades 9-12 with invaluable wisdom and guidance.
The event commenced with an electrifying keynote address by Tara Sullivan ‘11, a Principal at Flare Capital Partners. She captivated the audience with her groundbreaking venture capital and healthcare innovation work, emphasizing the critical importance of resilience, adaptability, and confidence in forging ambitious career paths. Her insights set the tone for a day filled with empowerment and inspiration.
Following the keynote, students had the incredible opportunity to participate in small-group discussions with alumnae, engage in candid conversations, and gain firsthand knowledge about professional life beyond Ursuline. I had the privilege of listening to Elizabeth Praught ‘03, a mechanical engineer at National Grid, whose expertise in Liquified Natural Gas Design Engineering provided a rare glimpse into the dynamic world of engineering. As an aspiring civil engineer, I found her insights both eye-opening and deeply motivating. Learning about her day-to-day responsibilities and career trajectory strengthened my determination to pursue engineering.
The impact of this event was undeniable. Students left with tangible knowledge, invaluable advice, and renewed confidence in their futures. The ability to connect with successful alumnae helped bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world achievement. Seeing these strong, independent women—once Ursuline students themselves—return to uplift and mentor the next generation reinforced the Ursuline community’s unbreakable strength and lifelong support.
While our high school students heard from alumnae speakers, our 7th and 8th grade students were busy with their own programming for International Women’s Day, which included two guest speakers: Fran Nutter-Upham, a former New Hampshire State Representative, and Cory Worrall, Public Policy Advocate from Rosie’s Place. Afterwards, the students broke into small groups and enjoyed activities that included reading about important women in history, creating inspirational playlists, and coloring photos of famous female role models. Claire Wilkens ‘29 shared, “the Ursuline teachers and staff made this such a fun and inspiring day for all of us, helping us recognize the importance of supporting and celebrating one another!” The program for grades 7-8 concluded with Serviam. Students put together care packages filled with personal toiletries for the women at Rosie’s Place, a community center that helps women in need.
The experience for all Ursuline students went beyond career exploration—it was about cultivating self-assurance, broadening perspectives, and embracing the boundless opportunities that lie ahead. The alumnae were more than just speakers; they were living proof that Ursuline graduates can and do leave lasting marks in every industry. Their generosity in sharing their time and experiences left students not only inspired and motivated but also empowered to shape their own futures fearlessly.
As we celebrate Women’s History Month, events like this remind us of the importance of strong, trailblazing women who pave the way for future generations. The Women in Leadership Program was not just an opportunity for networking and learning—it was a powerful affirmation that Ursuline women are leaders, innovators, and changemakers. Inspired by the alumnae who have come before us, we are reminded to embrace our strength, challenge barriers, and strive for greatness in all we do.
